“It’s okay to compromise your common sense for the spirit of adventure.”
This statement was my approach to sport and fitness growing up. This made the competition of sports like football, wrestling, track, bike racing, rock climbing, golf and racquetball fun and attractive. I fell in love with the process of trying something new to see how far I could take my abilities.

With all these different sports I would compete in, one thing was a common denominator for all of them: the practice of strength and conditioning. I wanted to read any book, magazine or journal about the principles of training for sport. I was able to test these principles not only on myself and my circle of friends, but soon on collegiate teams as an assistant coach. I ended up with a degree in exercise science/ physical education and experience that was priceless.

With dreams of being a head strength coach, my first professional job was a fitness director at a health club. I was a newlywed with a growing family and a new job. What I did not have was the maturity or wisdom to understand a business like a health club and I was fired from my dream job. I would spend the next ten years learning about business, sales and management.

Always on the search for new ways to bring strength and conditioning into my life, I was led to something called CrossFit. A new gym opened a block from my house and they called it “CrossFit.” I did one workout and was hooked. Before long I was certified to coach and was able use all my education and experience to help others. I loved it, this was my calling!
My wife Sara and I would go back and forth about starting our own gym but then get too scared to follow through. BUT, “It’s okay to compromise common sense for the spirit of adventure right?!”
We opened CrossFit 1936 in July 2015 and it has been the best decision for our marriage and family. We have the solution to help our community and I am able to impact the lives of others. CHEERS!

I was a stranger to most sports for a majority of my life and when I started long distance run races in my 30’s it was simply for fun. CrossFit snuck into my being little by little and has grown to be one of the most meaningful and rewarding parts of my life! I am also a little obsessed with the mental and emotional benefits of physical fitness- for myself and others. We have such an amazing group of women at 1936 and I love leading this tribe to bigger and better things!
My goal and passion is to be a facilitator of change. The amazing thing with our training is that the focus of change is individualized for each person, which I strongly believe is the only way long lasting change occurs. I am gifted the opportunity to see this on a daily basis.
A passion project of mine was to start a youth fitness program that brings fitness and character building together. 1936 CHAMPS- CrossFit Kids is exactly that and I am able to impact the community in BIG WAYS!

I am here to tell you that everyone is capable of making big changes to take control of their health. Growing up, I was not an athlete. I did not have a positive environment to promote fitness, healthy eating, or healthy anything for that matter. I played tennis only so that I could have an extra curricular listed on my college applications.

As an adult, I found myself overweight, unmotivated, and (in hindsight) hugely unhappy. Like many people, I tried and failed at many fad diets and the latest and greatest weight loss programs. In early 2016, at the age of 31, I started a program that we stuck with and found success. I was able to lose almost 50 pounds, I fell in love with running, and I felt better than I had in my whole life.

By 2017, I hit a plateau, I was bored with the same workout routines and needed something different. We signed up for a Spartan race and I stumbled upon CrossFit 1936 to help me prepare. I had absolutely NO IDEA what CrossFit was or what I was getting myself into. Stepping into the box on that first day was beyond intimidating, but I found something new for the first time in my life: EMPOWERMENT!
Who would have ever thought that first On-ramp session would set in motion events that led me to get my CrossFit L-1, CrossFit Kids certification and now Active Life personal training. I have found my passion!
Why am I telling you this? Everyone’s journey to health and wellness is different! At CrossFit 1936, you will become part of a family of like-minded individuals set on helping you be the best you. Whatever it is that you are looking for, I am here to help you! Want to lose weight? I got you! Looking to get stronger? You bet I can help! Need help with nutrition? I can help there too. Confidence? Self-esteem? Pain? Overall wellness? Check-check-check and check!
1936 RiverCity Fitness changed my life. Let me help you change yours!

In 2012, the company I worked for had group exercise classes during our lunch break and the instructor came in one day and said we were going to start doing CrossFit. I was not familiar with CrossFit, but the instant we started; I was hooked! There was a group of us that decided to enter a CrossFit competition. This outdoor competition was the 2013 Fittest Farmhand that was held in Waunakee, WI. We set up our tent and chairs next to a CrossFit box from Fort Atkinson. CrossFit Fort Atkinson had several groups that placed in the top three of several divisions. This really impressed me, so I decided to head on down to Fort Atkinson to join up.
While there I learned CrossFit skills from several great coaches that made a lasting impression on me including Jeb Simmons and Sheldon Williams. When I learned that Sheldon was opening a box in my hometown of Watertown, I joined what was then called CrossFit 1936. As the size of CrossFit 1936 grew, I saw an opportunity to become a Level 1 CrossFit Coach and help teach athletes. In November 2017, I started coaching classes as well as the On-ramp classes for beginners.
To this day, it is one of the greatest feelings to watch an athlete accomplish something they never thought they could do. As much as teaching technique, coaching CrossFit is more of empowering people to rise above their doubts and fears. This gives me the greatest satisfaction and why I love to coach.
So, I challenge YOU to take the next step and see what 1936 can do for you! Join us!
